Call for Applications: Two Postdoctoral Research Fellow Positions!
Two Research Fellows are sought to work on the following subprojects.
When applying, candidates must indicate which subproject they are applying for.
Subprojects No° 1 Title: “Federal Republic of Germany and the Danube”:
This subproject investigates Danube governance in West Germany, with a particular focus on the history of the
Danube–Main–Rhine Canal, including debates surrounding its design, economic impact, and environmental
consequences. Particular attention will be paid to the role of the German business community, especially in the
logistics and transport sectors. How did business actors position themselves regarding the construction of the
canal? How did they interact and/or clash with regional and national political authorities? To what extent did
German economic actors view the Danube and its river infrastructure as a potential gateway to new European
and global markets? The selected candidate will conduct archival research in Germany and in other relevant
archives necessary to achieve the project’s scientific objectives.
Subprojects No° 2 Title: “Yugoslavia and the Danube”:

to transform the country into a central hub for European inland waterway transport and hydroelectric power
production. Possible lines of inquiry include the construction of the Iron Gates hydroelectric power plants and/or
the Morava–Vardar Canal project. Candidates are also encouraged to propose alternative research topics that
may contribute to achieving the broader objectives of the project. The selected candidate will conduct archival research in the territories of the former Yugoslavia and in other relevant archives necessary to achieve the
